How lakh and crore work
The Indian system names every two digits after the first thousand: a lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand) and a crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million). After crore come arab (100 crore, one billion) and kharab (100 arab). That’s why Indian figures are grouped 12,34,56,789 while international figures are grouped 123,456,789: the commas fall where the names change.
- 1 lakh = 100 thousand
- 10 lakh = 1 million
- 1 crore = 100 lakh = 10 million
- 100 crore = 1 arab = 1 billion
Need to convert between them? Use the lakh and crore converter. Writing a cheque? The cheque amount in words tool adds “Rupees … Only” and paise.
Decimals in words
Digits after the decimal point are read one by one: 12.05 is “twelve point zero five”. Money is different: on a cheque, ₹12.05 is “Rupees Twelve and Five Paise Only”.

Questions
How do you write 1,00,000 in words?
1,00,000 is “one lakh” in the Indian system, “one hundred thousand” internationally, and “एक लाख” in Hindi.
How do you write 10,00,000 in words?
10,00,000 is “ten lakh”, which is the same as “one million” (1,000,000).
How many zeros are in a crore?
Seven. One crore is 1,00,00,000, or ten million.
Is it “lakh” or “lakhs”?
In words, the number name stays singular: “five lakh”, “twenty crore”, just as you’d say “five thousand”. “Lakhs” is common in speech but not in formal writing or on cheques.
Do you use “and” in numbers, as in “one hundred and five”?
British English often says “one hundred and five”; Indian banking and US usage drop the “and”. Calsee writes “one hundred five” and keeps “and” for the rupees-and-paise join on cheques.
Is this converter accurate for very large numbers?
Yes. It works with exact digits, not floating point, up to 21 digits, so 999,999,999,999,999,999 comes out exactly. Calsee, the calculator app, uses the same rules.
