Questions
How do I write ₹1,50,000 on a cheque?
Write “Rupees One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only” on the words line and “1,50,000/-” in the box.
How do I write paise on a cheque?
Join the rupees and paise with “and”: ₹1,234.50 is “Rupees One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty Four and Fifty Paise Only”. Write the figures as 1,234.50.
Why write “Only” at the end?
“Only” marks the end of the amount so nobody can add words after it. Draw a line through any blank space as well.
Can I write the cheque amount in Hindi?
Yes. Banks in India accept the amount in Hindi or another Indian language, for example “एक लाख पचास हज़ार रुपये मात्र”. The words and the figures must agree.
Should I use lakh or million on an Indian cheque?
Lakh and crore. Indian cheques are read in the Indian numbering system, so ₹10,00,000 is “Rupees Ten Lakh Only”, not “one million”.
